Soé de Stork
by M. Tiyasaa
Book description:
It was Soé’s first day in her new school. She ignored Gili de Pigeon’s warm greeting. Instead, the lovely voice of Klaten de Cockatoo, the beautiful wings of Poso de Peacock and the cool style of Ranai de Crowned Crane caught her attention more than Gili’s friendly face. Yet reality showed her a different perspective.
Soé went from one bird to another, searching for the “perfect” friend. Yet everyone seemed annoyed by her greeting tour. She began to lose her self-confidence and felt lonely. Until Gili sat next to her and mentioned something astonishingly simple but sweet to hear.

Soé de Stork, born from the author’s concern about discrimination issues among kids, is created to help children to have greater appreciation for diversity and instill confidence in themselves. All of the elements of the illustrations are handmade paper collages by the author herself, and photographed by her husband.

Sabio had been facing the same issue because of his skin colour, his facial features, and also his persistent friendly attitude. It was a tough period for him and Mom. Although adults sometimes view it as a minor issue, being rejected by friends is a major problem for kids. They have an innocent and beautiful view about this world. Rejection is a harsh reality for them, while their feeling is also a reality for their parents. Sabio often gave Mom a you-don't-know-how-it-feels stare back then. On certain occasions, he still asks Mom about his "true" ethnicity.

How can this kind of book help? When children see an adult as an adult, an understanding book might help them to overcome the issue. A character who share the same problem. Then, hold your thoughts (honestly, it was a hard thing to do), and let the children speak their conclusion of the story.
That's why, Mom is so curious how this story will unravel. And excited to see not only its unusual illustration technique, but also its hand lettered text.
